Durga Devi’s homecoming is one of the most cherished moments in the cultural and spiritual life of Bengal. It is believed that during the festival of Durga Puja, the goddess leaves her celestial abode in Kailash and journeys to her maternal home on earth, accompanied by her four

children—Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, and Ganesha. This return is not just a divine visit; it symbolizes the eternal bond between mother and daughter, and the longing of every family awaiting the return of their loved ones.

Her arrival brings with it an atmosphere of festivity and joy. The streets come alive with lights, colors, and the rhythm of dhak. Homes and pandals are decorated with flowers and idols, and people welcome her with devotion,

as though they are welcoming their own daughter back home after a long absence. For five days, the goddess is worshipped, celebrated, and adored in every heart. [photography, blog]

Yet, her homecoming also carries a poignant undertone. As she must return to Kailash after the festivities, devotees perform sindoor khela, dhunuchi naach, and finally immerse her idol in rivers and lakes with tearful prayers.

Durga’s homecoming thus captures both the joy of reunion and the pain of farewell—an eternal cycle that mirrors human emotions of love, belonging, and separation. [Photography, Blog]
