Tangra — Kolkata’s historic Chinatown — erupts with sound as Chinese New Year arrives. The city breathes in orange and drumbeats.

Drummers strike their skins with force. Cymbals clash sharply. Lion heads leap forward, twist, bow, and claim the narrow lanes beneath tangled wires and aging brick walls.

Restaurant owners welcome the lions inside. Dancers weave between tables, dip their heads, and offer prosperity for the year ahead.

Performers guide every movement with precision. Volunteers carve space through the crowd. Children chase the procession with wide eyes. Elders stand at doorways and lift their palms in blessing.

Firecrackers burst underfoot and scatter red fragments across the asphalt.

Smoke rises and wraps the street in a haze of celebration.

In a courtyard, dancers balance on stools and lift the lion high above the crowd. Musicians control the tempo and drive each jump.

A monk watches quietly, phone in hand, as ritual meets routine. Scooters halt. Drivers wait. The neighborhood moves with the rhythm.

Tangra does not preserve heritage behind glass. The community carries it through the streets. The drums command it. The lions roar it into the New Year.
